In this context, we recently explored the nature and abundance of sulfur molecules in disks. Highlights of the Laboratory's work and associated science topics can be found
We can use laboratory experiments to explore what types of chemistry are active in these very low-temperature and low-pressure conditions. This laboratory supports NASA’s space science missions and programs. We study the physical and chemical properties of interstellar, cometary, asteroidal, planetary and lunar …
She combines theory, astronomical observations and experiments to explore the chemical environments within which planets assemble, the links between chemistry and dynamics in planet-forming disks and how the compositions of mature planets depends on the disk environment where they formed.

Each of the IAU’s nine divisions awards a prize to the candidate it feels has carried out the most remarkable work in the previous year.
Through kinetic modeling we find that photo-produced oxygen atoms react with hydrocarbons with effectively no energy barrier, and so this pathway should be active in the coldest interstellar regions. The Astrophysics and Astrochemistry Laboratory is located in the Space Sciences and Astrophysics Branch of the Space Science and Astrobiology Division ( By studying the chemical compositions of these disks we can assess how and where the seeds of life formed. The Heriot-Watt Astrochemistry Research Group: Welcome The regions of space between the stars are commonly known as the Interstellar Medium (ISM). The IAU PhD Prize recognises outstanding scientific achievements of astronomy PhD students around the world. Karin Öberg, Professor of Astronomy , has been named a 2020 Simons Investigator recipient for her work on the role of chemistry during planet formation. We also investigate the effects of interstellar, planetary and lunar processes (ultraviolet irradiation, heating and cooling) on the structure, composition and the evolution of these materials.
From these experiments we have built up a database that has been used (in conjunction with astronomical data) to search for and identify molecules in space. The scientists in the Astrophysics and Astrochemistry Laboratory have been actively involved in space missions and have done astronomical observations from space-, airborne-, and ground-based telescopes such as the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes, Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) and the NASA IRTF and NOAO Kitt Peak Telescopes. Planet-forming disks govern the outcome of planet formation, including the composition of nascent planets and their hospitality to life.
With the jaw-dropping slide from Öberg's presentation on the MAPS project showing how 5 discs with internal structures appear in various molecules We also lead several open-source software projects that provide tools for exoplanet research to the astronomical community.People: Dr. Joseph Harrington, Dr. Theodora KaralidiLinks: Exoplanet Measurement Group
The Exoplanets Group uses space telescopes to reveal the sizes, temperatures, atmospheric properties, and orbits of many planets and brown dwarfs outside our solar system.
It is not currently understood how large molecules can form in very cold (10K) environments such as pre-stellar cores or the frozen midplanes of protoplanetary disks. This chemistry may contribute to the formation of products like CH3OH, CH3CHO, and CH2CO, which are commonly detected in pre-stellar cores where other types of organic chemistry are not expected to be efficient. Star- and planet-forming regions are host to a rich organic chemistry, which may seed nascent planets with the ingredients for prebiotic chemistry. Her models of planet compositions have provided an interpretive framework for the exoplanet community. The Astrophysics and Astrochemistry Laboratory is located in the Space Sciences and Astrophysics Branch of the Space Science and Astrobiology Division ( SS) at NASA's Ames Research Center ( ARC ), in Mountain View, California.
