Public Allies has been a leader in efforts to build the next generation of diverse talent and leadership for the non-profit sector. Its mission is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it.
Participants ("Allies") have worked in a variety of places including youth development organizations, health care settings and community development corporations. The handprint depicted in the logo represents the mark that people leave on their communities and on the people they touch in the course of their lives. Working with Voices for National Service, the Public Allies’ six core values are integrated into the program:

Katrina Browne, Producer/Director/Writer Ms. Browne produced and directed the Emmy-nominated Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North , a documentary about her discovery that her ancestors, the DeWolfs of Rhode Island, were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. More than 85% of program graduates continue their careers in nonprofit and public service. Public Allies' mission is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. Public Allies recruits a multiracial group of young adults, ages 18-30, to serve in full-time professional apprenticeships over a 10-month period in nonprofit agencies. It took nine years, and 500 parties to make this film and dialogue groups.
