I liked it much § Really appropriate for 14-15 teenagersI am the parent of an 11 year old and a mature almost 14 year old, and while I would be fine with my older child watching "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," it would need to be accompanied by lots of discussion, because while it is a wonderful, very worthwhile film, there is just a lot of drinking, drugs, sex, and partying happening in a way that normalizes and makes them attractive. What difference might an involved and caring parent or teacher have had on them? It even has some lgbtq representation what is important for everyone who may struggle with it themselves. I think it was a very good movie. The young teen who is alone and starting high school makes friends with a group on seniors. There is a couple moments of drug use, including laced brownies, acid, and drinking at parties. The main character is relatable. This movie is based on a novel by Stephen Chbosky. For each quote, you can also see the other characters and themes related to it (each theme is indicated by its own dot and icon, like this one: ). The characters were neither likable or unlikable, acting was average, it sets a bad example for young teens.

Personally though, I feel that all the stuff I just listed is warranted and completely on topic considering the story's plot. FWIW, my daughter had read the book earlier in the day and liked it better than the movie. Violence has a boyfriend hitting his girlfriend, bullying of gay students, some bickering between characters. The film is a story about how people see themselves, and the importance of recognizing that people change- sometimes faster than their self-image can accommodate. They seem like a nice group but they do take drugs, have sex and there is fighting and some of the teens coming to accept they are gay. This film is so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.I agree with another reviewer on here about this film being a huge let down and the trailer is very misleading. The perks of The Perks of Being a Wallflower are in its other uplifting messages about friendship, change, and acceptance.
