Jeanne Moreau is wonderful, but it’s basically a cameo. It doesn't explain a lot, but we understand a lot about it all the same. Included in the Bonus DVD Video of The Fire Within, 2005. It is based on the novel Will O' the Wisp by Pierre Drieu La Rochelle which itself was inspired by the life of Jacques Rigaut.
Alain Leroy, a recovering alcoholic at a rehabilitation clinic in The stark contrast and seemingly pointless nature of his friends' bourgeois existence only brings Leroy into a state of even further contention with his absence of meaning in life, perceived by him. It is quiet and indicative. Louis Malle has done that brilliantly in "The Fire Within," which isn't exactly based on Scott Fitzgerald's "Babylon Revisited" but is certainly inspired by it. So it comes to us now as a rediscovered treasure, a film that would have been influential for the past five years -- if only it had been shown.Malle's character seems superficially similar to Fitzgerald himself. Malle started work on The Fire Within in 1962, after a journalist friend said he was leaving on a trip and then shot himself in his room, where he was found days later. And he is an alcoholic, whose addiction had undermined his confidence in his art and his manhood.
