The Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance, was the largest and most important military conflict in the history of South America, after the Wars of Independence, and its only true 'continental' war.
This called the attention of Brazil and Argentina, who wanted to keep the economic dominance of the La Plata River for themselves. It was an incredibly lopsided contest.
The Triple Alliance was an agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.It was formed on 20 May 1882 and renewed periodically until it expired in 1915 during World War I.Germany and Austria-Hungary had been closely allied since 1879. It involved four countries and lasted for more than five years, during which Paraguay fought alone against a powerful alliance formed by Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
